BURY MY SIN WITH CHRIST

Lewis Bayly, Bishop of Bangor, Wales
(1575-1631)

O most mighty and glorious God,
full of incomprehensible power and majesty,
whose glory the heaven of heavens cannot contain,
look down from heaven on me, your unworthy servant,
who here prostrate myself at your throne of grace.

Look upon me, O Father, through the merits and meditation of Jesus Christ,
your beloved Son, in whom alone you are well pleased!
For of myself, I am not worthy to stand in your presence,
or to speak with unclean lips to such a holy God.

For you know that in sin I was conceived and born, and that I have lived ever since in iniquity.
I have broken all your commandments by sinful desires, unclean thoughts, evil words, and wicked works;
omitting many of those duties which you require and committing many of those vices which you forbid.

[Here you may confess to God your secret sins which most burden your conscience, saying: “O Lord, I do here with grief of heart confess...”]

For these sins, O Lord, I stand guilty of your curse.
But with you there is mercy, and full redemption.
In light of your grace, and confident in Christ’s merits
I entreat your divine Majesty not to enter into judgment with your servant.
Wash away all the uncleanness of my sin, with merits of that precious blood which Jesus Christ has shed for me.

O Lord, deliver me from my sins, and from those judgments which hang over my head;
separate them as far from your presence as the east is from the west!
Bury them in the burial of Christ, that they may never have power to rise up against me,
to shame me in this life or to condemn me in the world which is to come.

I beseech you, O Lord, not only to wash away my sins with the blood of your immaculate Lamb but also to purge my heart by your Holy Spirit,
That I may feel your Spirit more and more killing my sin, so that this day I may with more freedom serve you, the everlasting God, in righteousness and holiness.

May I persevere as your faithful servant to my life’s end, and be made a partaker of happiness in your heavenly kingdom.
